Vat Purnima Vrat : Story

Once there was a kingdom named Madra where King Ashvapati and queen Malavi praised God Savitr. Therefore, they were blessed with a daughter they named Savitri. She led a saint living in the kingdom and later when she grew up, the king, her father asked her to find herself a husband. She chose to marry Satyavan son of an exiled king Dyumatsenec. Because he was very gentle and religious his nature. She liked his behavior and kept a proposal in front of him as a marriage. But satyvan refused and said you are a princess and I am a beggar. How can you survive with me?

Lord Narad Muni warned her that Satyvan is imminent to die within a year. However, Savitri was determined on her decision and after marriage, she went to the forest with her husband. Later the days passed by and on the day when Satyawan was about to die, Savitri laid his body under a Banyan tree. Lord Yama came to take his soul but Savitri pleaded and praised Yamaraj, who got impressed with her faith told her to ask for three boons of her choice, exclude the life of Satyavan. Her in-laws were in exile, she asked her first boon for them to be re-establish in their kingdom with peace and grace. She asked the second boon for a son for his father. Lastly, she demanded her babies as her third boon. Yama stood there in a dilemma but finally agreed and had to left Satyavan alive. Savitri circled all around the Banyan tree after that Satyavan woke up. Savitri could save the life of her husband Like this.

Vat Savitri Fasting and Importance:-

In northern India, Vat Savitri Vrat is celebrated during Jyeshtha Amavasya whereas in other states, Vat Savitri Vrat, which is also called Vat Purnima Vrat, is observed during Jyeshtha Purnima.

Therefore, married women in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and southern Indian states keep Vat Savitri Vrat 15 days later than that of North Indian women. However, the story behind observing the fast is the same in both calendars. As per vat Savitri Vrat’s story, the great Savitri mislead Lord Yama, the lord of death, and urged Him to return the life of her husband Satyawan.
