Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram district announced a total of 13 Zika virus cases on Thursday.

Although the COVID-19 pandemic is in process in Kerala, state Health Minister Veena George remarked on Thursday (July 8) that Zika virus cases have been detected in the state. “This is the first time that Zika virus has been discovered in Kerala… a 24-year-old pregnant lady discovered at a hospital in the state capital district with fever, headache, and rashes last month. The first results showed symptoms of Zika virus and later from 19 samples tested, 13 also showed Zika positive. All the samples have now been forwarded to NIV Pune,” she said.
“The Health Department and the district officials are seized of the issue and have taken measures by collecting samples of the Aedes species mosquitoes, which spreads it to people through its bite. All the districts have been careful about this and measures have started,” George said.
What is the Zika virus
Zika virus is transmitted mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito (Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus). These mosquitoes bite at all hours of the day and night. Dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever are all transmit by Aedes mosquitos. This virus can be transferred from a pregnant lady to her fetus, resulting in microcephaly and other congenital defects in newborns.
It has also been linked to other complications of pregnancy issues such as preterm birth and miscarriage. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals infected with the Zika virus can also potentially spread the disease to their sex partners.
Sign of Zika virus infection
